Cortez BMX Shed Fire

On Thrusday September 2 we got a call from Cortez Dispatch that smoke was seen coming from our shed. When I got there the firetruck was just rolling up the hoses after putting out the blaze. Investigators told us it appeared to have started from the outside. The shed itself suffered extensive damage to the east side, and will most likely need to be replaced. There was also serious damage to the interior. All of the T-Shirts, hats and loaner helmets were distroyed as well as at least half of the trophies. We aren't sure if the PA system still works (the wireless receiver is completely melted) and we are unsure if the compressor still works. We will know more later, most likely on Tuesday evening after state.

All in all, things could have been much worse. We currently do not anticipate cancelling any races, but again, more will be know Tuesday. We would like to think of this as an opportunity and we plan to stay extremely positive. Many in the community have already come to us asking what they can do to help, thank you in advance. We want to thank the Cortez Fire Department and Police department for the quick response. Also, thanks to the City of Cortez for helping us secure the building and offering us their continued support.

There will be more news after the State Finals in Grand Junction this weekend.

Thanks to everyone who helped us with our multi race weekend. The earned double and the Redline Qualifiers both were successes.

2010 Cortez BMX Race For Life:

This year 88 riders participated in the event! All profits from raffle drawings and concessions were donated to the cause in addition to individual rider fund raising and $5 race entry fees. Cortez BMX is proud to announce that we donated a grand total of $2365 to this great cause. A special congratulations goes out to 4 riders for their individual fund raising totals: 1) Aaron McClain $690; 2) Chase Moore $230; 3) Colt Fury $95; and 4) Cameron Fury $95. We had many other riders who worked very hard to raise money, and we could not have made this such a successful event without all of their work and many families' support!

2) August Coaching Information
Tuesday Nights (The last coaching session for the 2010 season will be Tuesday August 31)

Coaching will go back to previous June arrangement with a few minor adjustments:

Fee will be a flat $15 for all riders for the month (regardless of number of coaching sessions attended).
A multiple family member discount will be offered as follows:
--1st rider $15
--2nd rider $10
--3rd rider $5
--$5 for any additional riders

1) Chili will continue to coach the advanced group from 6:45 to 8:00.
2) Chili will now coach the intermediate group also, starting at 5:30 P.M. on Tuesdays.
3) Mark Baxter will coach the Novice group at 5:30 P.M.
4) Chili will evaluate each rider to determine group placement, placement may be subject to change during the course of the month.
5) Enrollment for coaching slots will be open beginning on Monday, August 2nd and will continue on Tuesday, August 3rd.

While we understand that there are circumstances that may prevent riders from attending practice, a certain level of commitment
is expected from each rider who fills a coaching slot (particularly in the advanced group.) Failure to attend practice may result in being
moved to a lower group.

All money generated by coaching is being put into the track redesign fund. Redesign will happen in October 2010.

3) Board approved track redesign for early October 2010. Why do we need a track redesign? Here are the top reasons the board had for making this decision: 1) Track erosion has caused many of our obstacles to decrease in size over time, which places our riders at a disadvantage when visiting other tracks to race. 2) It is typical for tracks to redesign every 4-5 years. Our last redesign was 5 years ago. 3) Our goal is to create a high quality BMX program that is sustainable over time. A large part of meeting this goal is maintaining a high quality track.
